  • Carbon Copy Cloner — Clone, synchronize, backup. Schedule and forget it. Freeware with PayPal donations.
  • SuperDuper — backup utility that creates fully bootable backup volumes. Commercial $27.95. See Macworld 5-Mouse rating and review.

Code Editors

  • AlphaX — programming code editor. Freeware. See also About AlphaX.
  • SubEthaEdit — collaborative text editor with built-in networking tools. Shareware $40. — Not really for me.
  • jEdit — open source code editor for Windows, Linux and Mac. Freeware. — ugly and not very nice interface.
  • Komodo Edit — code editor and project manager. Freeware with paid language add-ons. — huge package but seems fully featured.
  • Mac Help Writer — nice little app to write HTML help files for Mac OS Help system. Shareware $30. — quite simple and easy to use.
  • svnX — open-source GUI editor for Subversion. Freeware. See also Macintosh Research: Subversion.
  • EasyEclipse for PHP — php editor in Eclipse development environment. Freeware. Apple.com Staff Pick.

FTL, SFTP and SSH Clients

  • CyberDuck — open source FTP and SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) browser with an easy to use interface, integration with external editors and support for many Mac OS X system technologies such as Spotlight, Bonjour, the Keychain and AppleScript. Excellent Software. See also Help Section.
  • DockDrop — drag any file or folder you want to share onto the Dockdrop dock icon then choose how you want to send it. Dockdrop uploads it and puts a URL for your upload on the clipboard, ready for pasting into an Email, chat program or website. Freeware.
  • Transmit — fully featured FTP, SFTP and SSH client for OSX. Panic Software, Cost $29.95.

Graphics and Video Software

  • Photo To Movie — convert photos into movies with pan, zoom and other effects. Shareware $49.95.
  • Shomi — just drop things on Shomi and it will show them to you. Drop several things and it can divide your screen into tiles and show them all at once. When you've seen enough, click the mouse, and Shomi will vanish again. This excellent software was written by Maf Vosburgh.
  • Miro — excellent open-source video software that seems to play almost any video file including SWFs. Organise things into libraries and subscribe to video channels.
  • Wimpy Desktop FLV Player — free cross platform (Mac and PC) standalone Flash Video FLV player which will allow you to watch your FLV and SWF videos from your desktop. A bit ropey round the edges, but gets the job done.

Office/Editing

  • Desktastic — take notes, visually demonstrate, draw stupid pictures. Panic Software, Cost $12.95.
  • Ecto — desktop blogging client for MacOSX and Windows which works with Wordpress and others. Commercial £10.
  • OpenOffice — open source alternative to Microsoft Office including Writer, Calc, Draw, Math, Impress and Base.

Productivity and System Utility Software

  • BatChmod — utility to change OSX file and folder privileges including Owner, Group and Other permissions and unlocking troubled files. Excellent. Freeware from Renaud Boisjoly

  • cMap — construct, navigate, share and criticize knowledge models represented as concept maps.
  • Coda — integrated web development environment with Text editor + Transmit (FTP) + CSS editor + Terminal + Books + More. Panic Software, Cost $79.
  • FileXaminer — a "Get Info" utility to modify OSX file and folder attributes. Shareware $10 from Gideon Softworks.
  • KeePass — password manager to store all your sensitive info in one encrypted file. Open Source for Windows, Mac, Linux. Excellent.
  • LaunchBar — provides instant keyboard access to launch applications, documents, contacts and bookmarks. Commercial $19.95. See Macworld 5-Mouse rating and review.
  • MacJanitor — designed to be used on a periodic basis by Mac OS X users who don't leave their computer on (and awake) 24 hours a day, when the OS runs housecleaning tasks. Excellent Software.
  • MacPorts — formerly DarwinPorts is open source software project to simplify installation of other free/open source software on the Mac OS X.
  • MAMP — an application that installs Apache, MySQL, and PHP on your Mac.
  • PrefSetter — edit plist (Property LIST) files
  • QuickSilver — way cool process launcher for OSX.
  • Remember — free memory test tool.
  • TigerLaunch — easy-to-use freeware application launcher for OS X that adds an Applications menu to your Apple Menu bar listing all your installed applications. Excellent Software! See also ToDos.
  • TinkerTool — great utility that gives access to additional OSX preference and some application settings to activate hidden features. Freeware from Marcel Bresnik.

System Extension and Preference Panes

  • www.monkeyfood.com/... — System Preferences pane that allows you to set which applications are used for internet protocols, such as which app an AIM link will launch). Freeware. Excellent!

Time Management

  • ActiveTimer — time management app that logs how much time you spend in each Mac application. Freeware. Excellent and very useful.
  • Project Calculator — time management app to track the time you work on your projects with invoice generator. Commercial $14.90. Ok.
  • TimeTracker — time management app allowing you to setup projects and tasks with built-in timer to log as you go along. Freeware. Ok.
  • OnTheJob — time management app with invoicing. Commercial $24.99.

Windows on Mac

  • Parallels — run Windows on Intel Macs.
  • Virtual Box — Open Source virtualisation software allowing you to run Windows, Linux and other OS's on Mac, PC or Linux box.
