IMAP Path Prefix

In order to sync your Drafts and Sent mail folders with Mail, some IMAP servers require that you specify an IMAP path prefix:

  • Open Mail > Preferences and select the Accounts tab.
  • Select the IMAP account and open the Advanced tab.
  • Type the path for your server into the IMAP Path Prefix box:

  • For most servers this will be INBOX, InBox or Inbox. If unsure check with your web host administrator.
  • For Google Mail, use [Google Mail] (with the square brackets).

You should now find the Inbox, drafts and Sent mail folders for your account in the primary Mail mailboxes. There should also be a separate account-specific mailbox below containing any additional folders for your account.

Sent Mail Saved to Server

By default, most IMAP accounts will save Sent messages on the server to the Sent folder, but Apple Mail saves these to the Sent Message folder. Ensure that you setup your server-side Sent message folder to the same settings, usually done via your Webmail configuration.
